The book aims to shed light on the Sicilian designer's work by reconstructing as exhaustive a profile as possible, in order to fill a page that has remained incomplete for too long. Best known for his buildings at La Sapienza - the Faculties of Literature and Law - and for the great complex of the piazza and Basilica of San Giovanni Bosco at Tuscolano in the 1950s, Gaetano Rapisardi is remembered in historiography mostly as a trusted collaborator of Marcello Piacentini. Such a framing, in our opinion reductive, forgets (and sometimes omits) the complexity of Rapisardi's work as well as the interesting typological challenge that saw the architect confront an exceptional variety of themes, especially in the post-war period when Rapisardi, together with his brother Ernesto (often co-author of the works), interrupted their collaboration with Piacentini (while maintaining very cordial relations). An attempt has been made to restore, through this study, the entirety of his work, which numbers over 150 works known to date, some of which only through references in correspondence or archive documents. Rapisardi's projects and realisations cover a very wide time span, ranging from the early 1920s to the early 1970s, thus covering more than fifty years of professional activity. Despite his tireless drawing, design and construction work, there is unfortunately no equally intense theoretical production (except for a few project reports) to which we owe the equivocal interpretation of his work. Rapisardi was in fact, as far as we know from the rare direct testimonies collected, dedicated above all to design and drawing activity, absorbed to the point of not finding the time to systematise this work of his within a theoretical corpus, which of course does not imply that these realisations lacked 'critical depth', as has sometimes been unjustly implied.
This volume is published with the support of the Department of History, Design and Restoration of Architecture at the University of Rome 'Sapienza'.
